Helms Hope is a non-profit organization advancing skin cancer prevention, awareness, and early detection. Inspired by the life and lasting legacy of 21-year-old Shawn Helms Jr, Helms Hope encourages everyone to:

• Wear sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and reapply
  every 2 hours or after going in the water.
• Wear a hat to shield your face, neck, and ears.
• Avoid peak exposure. The sun’s rays are strongest
  from 10 AM–4 PM.
• Wear sunglasses! They block harmful UVA and UVB rays.

“One in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime,” Shawn Helms, the father of Shawn Helms, Jr. and co-founder of Helms Hope, said. “Melanoma is one the deadliest cancers in the world. Seeing a dermatologist annually and checking your skin could absolutely save your life or the life of a loved one.”
Because Shawn Jr.’s melanoma began on his scalp and was hidden by his thick hair, Helms Hope has created a skin cancer awareness program that involves hair stylists and barbers—the people who routinely view your scalp!

The online tutorial trains hair stylists and barbers on what to look for, the shape and look of an irregular mole, and gives suggestions on how to encourage their clients to seek medical help. Please click here to learn more or become involved in this initiative.
